BRIDGE OF ALLAN

It was Club Championship qualifying week with qualifiers for the knockout stages next weekend being finalised. On Friday it was the third qualifying round of the Gents Seniors Championship and winner on the day was Steve Ingram with 19 points. Willie Fernie and Alasdair Breingan were second and third respectively, both players scoring 18 points.

Jim Black ended up top qualifier for the Senior Championship and now plays Steve Ingram in the semi final next Friday. In the other semi final Douglas Gebbie will play Alastair Donald.

On Saturday it was the first qualifying round of the Club Championship and Oliphant Trophy and in the late summer sunshine scoring proved to be excellent. Best score of the day was returned by Tony Jackson with a net 61 with Louis Dowley taking second place with his net 64 and Euan Wallace third with a net 66.

In Sunday’s second qualifying round the greens were even slicker than the previous day, however scoring again proved excellent. Winner by virtue of a countback was Brian Park with a net 64, just pipping Garry Bowman. Third place went to Kyle Mcclung with his net 67.

In the Club Championship qualifying, Kyle Mcclung was top qualifier with a two-round total of 136 (gross) to also win the Strokeplay Championship for 2020. In the qualifying for the Oliphant Trophy, Garry Bowman was top qualifier with his two-round total of net 131 to win the Handicap Strokeplay Championship for 2020. In the Club Championship semifinals being played next Saturday, Kyle Mcclung will play Stuart Mclachlan and Garry Bowman will take on Brian Park in the other semi-final. In the Oliphant Trophy Tony Jackson will play Kevin Allan and Louis Dowley will play Jim Black.

STIRLING

Alan King and Roger Moore were both double winners last weekend after Alan’s net 66 won the John Begg Trophy (former member JB Davidson holds the tournament record with a net 60). Alan also won the Handicap Medal for the Autumn Meeting, won last year by Grant Mcpherson with Brian Boos setting the tournament record 30 years ago with a net 62.

Roger meanwhile won the Autumn Scratch Prize with his level par 72, five strokes off the tournament record set in 2004 by Ben Genese. Roger also won the KG Patrick Medal, awarded to the lowest aggregate gross score in the Spring and Autumn Meetings with an aggregate score of 148.

The Infirmary Cup, awarded to the lowest net aggregate score in the Spring and Autumn Meeting, was won by David Dryland with a score of 137, beating Les Davidson on the better second round. John E Colquhoun is the current holder while the tournament record is 133, set in 2001 by Brian Rose.

Full results: KG Patrick Medal – Roger Moore (76, 72 = 148 gross); Infirmary Cup – David Dryland (71, 66 = 137 net); John Begg Trophy – Alan King 79 (13) 66; Autumn Meeting Scratch Prize – Roger Moore 72; Autumn Meeting Handicap Medal – Alan King 79 (13) 66.

Competition for the John Begg Trophy was remarkable as 24 players returned net scores under the CSS of 71. The best of these, a net 66 by Alan King beat David Dryland, Craig Thomson and Joe Lahbib on the better inward half. David however, won the Division One sweep by two strokes from Roger Moore who returned a gross 72 thanks to a two under par 34 on the back nine. Roger’s better inward half squeezed out David Herron, who must have regretted his double bogey at the ninth hole.

Alan King won Division Two from Craig Thomson thanks to his inward half of 38 and Robert Beaton finished two strokes clear of five players to take third spot. Joe Lahbib, who had not entered the sweep, surrendered first place to Neil Malone who beat Les Davidson on the bih with Stuart Macaskill promoted to third.

Results: Division One – 1 David Dryland 74 (8) 66; 2 Roger Moore 72 (4) 68 bih; 3 David Herron 74 (6) 68. Division Two – 1 Alan King 79 (13) 66 bih; 2 Craig Thomson 80 (14) 66; 3 Robert Beaton 80 (13) 67. Division Three – 1 Neil Malone, 2 Les Davidson, 3 Stuart Macaskil.

Alongside last week’s Wednesday Monthly Medal was the Wednesday Medal Finals which produced the following winners: Division One - James Donaldson 67 (+1) 68; Division Two – Alan Greenhorn 81 (12) 69; Division Three – Les Davidson 87 (15) 72.

Results of the Monthly Medal were: Division One – 1 Kyle Henderson 75 (7) 68 bih; 2 James Donaldson 67 (+1) 68; 3 Alan Dryden 72 (3) 69. Division Two – 1 Christopher Russell 82 (14) 68; 2 John Yuill 80 (11) 69 bih; 3 Alan Greenhorn 81 (12) 69. Division Three - 1 Charlie Kidd 87 (19) 68 bih; 2 Steven Watt 86 (18) 68; 3 Stephen Roby (20) 69.

With only this week’s King Edward Coronation Cup remaining in the race for the President’s and Vice President’s Prizes it is likely that James Donaldson’s 15-stroke lead in the President’s Prize will be sufficient to win this year’s title. Dariusz Kunecki carries a smaller lead into the final round of the Vice President’s Prize, five strokes clear of James Donaldson who recently reduced his handicap to +2.1 after competing at Trump International Golf Links in an amateur event. Congratulations to James.

Well done also to Barry Paterson who won the King George V Trophy in a close match with John Colquhoun which produced a memorable result at the final hole.

Members are reminded that there are still a few spaces in this Sunday’s Captain’s Charity Day with some excellent prizes on offer along with hole-in-one prizes at the 6th - F7 Graphite Irons, 8th - Three-night Holiday in Portugal, 10th – Two-night golf trip to Forest of Arden. Star prize is a share of £2500 between all players scoring an ace at the short 14th with a further £2500 being shared between the nominated charities. Entry for a team of two is only £30.
