Tributes have been paid to former Lord Lieutenant of Stirling and Falkirk, Marjory Mclachlan CVO CSTJ JP, who has passed away in Strathcarron Hospice.

Among those who offered their condolences following the sad news was current Lord Lieutenant Alan Simpson OBE.

He said: “I remember Marjory as someone who was always full of life.

“She was full of ideas and when she wanted something done, she had a positive attitude that took others along with her. She also had an abundance of energy and none of us will forget her wonderful infectious laugh.

“Our lives were the better for knowing her and her loss is deeply felt.”

Her lifelong friend Morison Zuill provided the following tribute to Mrs Mclachlan.

“Marjory Jane Alexander was born in Falkirk on February 15, 1942, the fifth and youngest child of Walter and Kate Alexander.

“Walter and his father, also Walter, were the founders of Alexander’s Bluebird buses early in the 20th century. She attended St Leonards School in St Andrews where she developed her interest in sport.

“In September 1962 she married Colin Mclachlan, a leading Scottish amateur golfer.

“They had two daughters Jane and Katy, four granddaughters Emma, Carrie, Lara and Hayley and one great grandson Zach. The entire family benefited greatly from Marjory’s devoted attention, wisdom, kindness and sheer common sense.

“Aside from the family Marjory had many outstanding achievements. She joined Glenbervie Golf Club in January 1961 and was a member for over 59 years.

She was lady captain in 1982 and won the club’s Mixed Foursomes Trophy playing with Colin. She joined Falkirk Ladies Curling Club in 1965 and was president in 1982-84.

“Marjory was president of the ladies branch of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club in 1989/90 and captained a tour to North America in 1991. She was also Scotland’s representative on the World Curling Federation. She was a member of Falkirk Bridge Club for over 40 years and was president in 2009-11.

“Marjory was appointed Lord Lieutenant for Stirling and Falkirk in 2005, a position she held with great distinction until her retirement in 2017 when she was appointed CVO by Her Majesty the Queen.

One of the highlights of her period in office was when she accompanied The Queen at the opening of the Forth Valley Royal Hospital.”

He added: “Marjory did much charity work. She took over from her mother as chairman of the local Save the Children and British Sailors Committees. In addition, she was a Commander of the Order of St John.

“Marjory will be greatly missed by many people from all walks of life who appreciated her friendship, humour and easygoing inclusive manner.”

Stirling Provost Christine Simpson said: “We are very sad to learn of the death of Marjory Mclachlan CVO CSTJ who was Lord Lieutenant of Stirling and Falkirk from 2005 – 2017.

“In this capacity she represented the Queen at ceremonial occasions and events in Stirling and Falkirk.

“She was brought up and lived in Falkirk and was loved and respected throughout the community. Our thoughts go out to her husband Colin, their children and grandchildren.”

She had an abundance of energy and none of us will forget her wonderful infectious laugh
