Fuel poverty outreach help in time for winter
A new outreach worker is to offer specialist help for people struggling with energy costs as winter looms.
The post, set up at Stirling Citizens Advice Bureau, is a result of an increase in the number of people facing financial woes due to Covid-19 and a drastic rise in those suffering from fuel poverty.
The vulnerable persons field poverty outreach worker post, funded by the Scottish Southern Energy Network, will work with Stirling CAB to identify and support families and elderly people suffering fuel poverty within the SSEN supply area of Stirling district.
The aim is to ensure that vulnerable clients are supported to access a Priority Service Register and to help empower individuals to manage their fuel usage and escape fuel poverty altogether.
The outreach worker will help householders to maximise their income, provide advice on their energy bills as well as assist people to understand the potential for energy saving improvements, while working closely with the bureau’s Tackling Rural Isolation Support Service and its specialist Energy Advice Service.
Vulnerable clients will also be helped to obtain more affordable fuel tariffs by liaising with the bureau’s Energy Best Deal worker.
Project coordinator and outreach worker Laura Hutchison said:“i am extremely grateful to the Scottish Southern Energy Network and Stirling CAB for having a deep understanding of rural fuel poverty issues and the vulnerabilities that exist in the Stirling district area. This understanding has enabled me to go out in the community and support the most vulnerable people.
“Fuel poverty is a major concern in Scotland especially as we are now entering the coldest part of the year. It is my duty and hope that I can help individuals keep their home warm and assist them with their fuel and financial difficulties.”
