STIRLING ROTARY CLUB
President Alan Bradshaw welcomed fellow Rotarians, members of the Inner Wheel Club of Stirling and speaker Sarah Erskine CEO of Stirling Carers to the Thursday Zoom meeting. Stirling Carers was established in Stirling in 1991, with Sarah as its CEO for the past nine months. Stirling Carers supports unpaid carers in the heart of Scotland, holistic care, person centered, to be used by the carer in a way which suits them best, and which may be needed even after the original problem has ended. Demand is always high, at present 3200 carers are known to them, not all currently active, with carers as young as five in some cases. Children in this situation have special needs and to this end, Stirling Carers have contact with all schools in the area, as well as with the NHS and Social work. They try to provide breaks away from home and staff dealing with them have training in youth work. Young or old, each carer has an individual care plan. Covid 19 has of course exacerbated social isolation, and its attendant mental health problems. The charity is based in Stirling, working from the ex army buildings at the station, sharing with the Robertson Trust, a very supportive environment. As part of her new job Sarah is writing a new business plan, to deal with the continuing and rising need. Volunteers are central to the service but funding comes from statutory provisions and individual grant applications from funds such as Children in Need. Carers often find themselves in an unexpected situation with demands for which they have no training, not knowing where to seek help, and often unwilling to admit how stressed they are. Carers Stirling aims to meet as much of this need as it can. After Sarah had answered questions, Alan thanked her for her excellent talk. Further info on Stirling Rotary www.stirlingrotary1010. org
