Reclaim spooky times creatively
With Halloween fun curtailed this year a Cornton man has taken up the‘mantle’to bring some spooky smiles to his street.
Upcycler Aron Savoury has created a Halloween mantlepiece outside his home in Westhaugh Road, made entirely of reclaimed timber.
The only thing he bought, apart from lights and ornaments, was a box of screws for £21.
Aron runs his company Crafty Living which builds rustic, upcycled creative projects.
However he is also passionate about the environment and sources and resells reclaimed timber.
He said:“i started Crafty Living because I believe everyone is creative and has great ideas but not everyone has the know-how and the tools to do them. My job is to help bring customers’creative ideas to life, but I’m also passionate about inspiring and encouraging others to act on their creative ideas.”
Aron used to work as a visual merchandiser at Dobbies Garden Centre. His Halloween mantelpiece was inspired by a giant mantelpiece built by the husband of a member of staff at Dobbies as the entrance to a Christmas display.
“I loved the idea and wanted to build it myself,”said Aron. “The idea behind the mantlepiece is to show others great ideas that can be made from reclaimed timber but also, due to the current COVID pandemic, to do something fun for our street and help put a smile on passer-bys faces.
“We may not be able to interact with each other as normal, and kids may not be able to go trick or treating, but there’s no reason we can’t be creative - and no law to say you can’t stop and have a look.
“So far, there have been positive comments from passers-by and people have slowed down in their cars to look at the mantlepiece.
“The idea is that once Halloween is over, then a fresh Christmas display will be implemented on the mantlepiece. Hopefully we can encourage others to do similar things outside their homes too and put a smile on everyone’s faces.”
