Warning over scam Covid vaccine texts Messages link to fake NHS site asking for bank details

- CHRIS MARZELLA

Residents have been urged to be extra vigilant as heartless con artists have been preying on those awaiting coronavirus vaccination by circulating scam text messages claiming to be from the NHS.

People across the Stirling area have been receiving texts purporting to be from the health board that seeks personal information to process a vaccine test application.

The text message, containing a spelling mistake, reads: “We have, identified that your are eligible to apply for your vaccine,” and then provides a link for more information and to apply.

The link then takes those who click on it to a very convincing mock NHS page where it seeks to obtain personal information including details of a bank card.

There is no requirement to pay for vaccinations and health boards would never contact patients in this way.

People are being advised not to click the links in the text messages and to warn elderly and vulnerable friends and family members about the circulating scam.

Mid Scotland and Fife Tory MSP Dean Lockhart has been contacted by a number of concerned constituents who have received the text message.

He said: “These scams are utterly despicable and show just how low these criminals will go as they prey on fears and anxieties during a public health crisis.

“Many people may receive these fake messages and we must make sure that all our family, friends and neighbours are made very aware what to look out for.

“The golden rule is never to send any information requested or click on a link.

“Regarding the vaccination programme a letter will be sent out so ignore this fake text.”

The MSP says that the scam is another example of a number of fake emails and text messages that have been created by fraudsters.

Others include ones offering tax refunds, council tax reductions, grants and contact tracing information and there have also been reports of fraudsters making calls to people seeking them to provide payment to obtain a vaccination.
