Callander group is reaching for the stars

- ALASTAIR MCNEILL

A free weekend of online stargazing, organised by a Callander group, will take place this weekend.

Callander’s Landscape is hosting its annual Dark Skies weekend‘The Sky Above Us’from tomorrow (Friday) to Sunday.

Spaced-themed activities include cosmic Scots poetry, a live stargazing session with astronomers using telescopes in the Canary Islands, and a family quiz.

There will also be cosmic experiments and an interactive space trail for young stargazers.

The activities have been designed to allow families to learn more about the night sky.

Volunteer and activities officer at Callander’s Landscape, Julie Wilson, said:“We are lucky in Callander to have good quality darkness within easy reach of the town centre and clear night skies during the winter months.

“With Covid-19 restrictions in place, events cannot take place in person but ‘The Sky Above Us’event is a chance for families to enjoy the wonders of the universe from their own home.

“All events over the course of the weekend are self-led or online and it’s a brilliant way for Stirling residents to learn more about the night sky.”

Callander’s Landscape is aimed at transforming the Callander area into the‘outdoor capital’of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

It has been focusing on improving the natural and cultural heritage in the area and hopes to be able to involve local people in events later this year, including river bank improvements and woodland management.

All events are free of charge, thanks to funding from the Institute of Physics Scotland, and can be booked through the website: www. callanderslandscape.org/event/ theskyaboveus2021
