Going the distance to support hospice Join Land’s End to John O’Groats virtual challenge

- KAIYA MARJORIBANKS

Walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats is a big ask but Strathcarron Hospice is hoping people will do just that.

But those hoping to support the hospice needn’t worry - they have five months to cover the 874 miles total distance, all without venturing too far from home.

The effort is Strathcarron’s biggest virtual challenge yet.

Fundraising manager Jackie Johnston said: “People can choose to walk, run or cycle your way (virtually) from Land’s End to John O’Groats this year.

“But don’t worry, you have from May 1 until October 1 to complete this monumental challenge.

“As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we need the public’s support now more than ever to keep our services running for local people living with, and dying from, a terminal illness.

“People can register now. We are here to support you every step of the way and you’ll even see your progress on your own virtual map once you’ve set up your fundraising page.”

Registration is £20 per person which gives access to the event where you’ll see your progress on your own virtual map once you set up your fundraising page.

Simply link your page with Strava (or manually upload your activities) and get started. You’ll also receive a hospice t-shirt and a bespoke medal on completion of your challenge.

Jackie added: “We are asking people to pledge to raise a minimum of £218 so that we can continue to care for people in our 40th year and beyond.

“Why £218? Well, when the hospice first opened in 1981, we had to raise £218 a day to keep our services running.

“Now, 40 years later, our services have grown so much that we have to raise £12,900 every day to continue to provide our specialist care, love and support to people across Forth Valley,

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth.”

The hospice is also encouraging people to join in a more relaxing type of fundraiser.

Supporters are being asked to host their own Big Virtual

Birthday Tea on April 24, marking four decades since the Denny hospice opened its doors.

People can get together virtually with friends, family or colleagues on that date through

Zoom, WhatsApp, Teams or Facebook.

Jackie said: “Think home baking, bake-off style competitions, online quizzes or fancy dress. However you decide to host yours, we are here to support you every step of the way. We’ve got a virtual background you can use on Zoom, an 80s themed quiz and recipe ideas to try at home.”
