Primary school is to be extended

-

Borestone Primary School is to be extended.

Conditional approval has been granted by Stirling Council planners for a single storey extension at the school in Newpark Crescent, St Ninians.

One objection to the plans was submitted saying the extension was unnecessary as a new school had previously been offered but not taken forward.

Other issues cited included unsuitable access for construction and delivery lorries, and parking during and after completion.

However, the planners said:“The applicant has applied to extend the current school, and this application must be assessed on its own merits. It is considered that the proposals comply with the relevant policies.

“The authority’s roads team were consulted on the proposals, and no specific concern was noted regarding this matter. However, a condition has been inserted requiring a Construction Traffic Management Plan to be submitted in writing to, and approved by, the planning authority, prior to works starting on site, to account for the expected increase in vehicular trips during the construction phase as a result of this proposal.

“Sufficient space exists onsite to accommodate the required increase in parking provision.

“The proposals are considered to represent an acceptable scale of development, being single storey, and occupying a small section of a large building. The design is considered to be sympathetic to the main building.”

The planners added that the extension would be to the south of the building therefore there would be no significant impact on neighbouring properties.

“The small loss of open space is not considered to represent a sufficient reason for refusal.”

Borestone Primary School opened in July 1959, accommodating 680 pupils.

In 2019 council officials reported that Ogilvie Homes were expected to pay £467,127 towards the £917,451 costs of a two-classroom extension for Borestone Primary as part of consent for a 185-house development planned for a site off Coxithill Road.
