Have a say on 20mph zones

- KAIYA MARJORIBANKS

Braehead and Broomridge residents are being asked whether they want speed limits in their area reduced to 20mph.

The local community council is currently consulting locals on 20mph zones and limits. Chairperson Hugh McClung said: “The community council has regularly discussed concerns from local residents about speeding motorists in the area.

“I’ve discussed the matter with the community police and they informed us that their colleagues recorded one motorist going at 91mph down Colquhoun Street.

“Something has to be done.”

Colquhoun Street resident Nina Luti said she has concerns given speeding along her road continued to get worse.

“Some drivers are really exceeding the speeds limits in this built up area,” said Nina. “My concerns are for children and elderly people who may step out onto the road and these drivers would not be able to stop in time which could cause serious injury.”

Braehead and Broomridge Community Council have put an electronic survey on their Facebook page asking people to give their views on whether the area should have 20mph zones or limits.

Secretary Gary McGrow said: “The benefits of 20mph zones are potentially making the area safer with less road traffic accidents, reduced pollution and reduction in traffic noise.

“However, some of the challenges will be enforcing a lower speed limit and increased costs for new signs and traffic calming measures.

“We want to hear from local residents on the issue, particularly if they know of any hot spots that 20mph can help make safer.

“We’ve recently had a lot of concerns about speeding at the crossing on Pike Road near Targe Wynd.”

Targe Wynd resident Vicky McLachlan said: “I’ve regularly witnessed people stood at the crossing when drivers have continued through. Something needs to be done before there is an accident. With the speeds drivers reach on this road it could be fatal.”

Braehead and Broomridge residents can take part in the consultation survey by going to the community council Facebook page or by emailing braeheadbroomridgecc@ gmail.com to receive a link to the survey.
