Tommy tribute mooted
A former Stirling Provost could soon be commemorated in his home village.
Tommy Brookes died last August at the age of 82 having represented Plean at many levels over decades.
However, there are plans to name a street in a new housing development after him to mark his efforts for the community.
Tommy, then a Labour councillor, was ousted from Stirling Council in 2003 when he was Provost, following alleged irregularities over his role in a proposed land deal as chairman of the Cowane’s Trust. However, he was later cleared after a 16-month long police inquiry.
He had been the first Provost of the then newly -formed Stirling Council and took great pride in representing the area both locally, nationally and internationally, including strengthening Stirling’s links with 43 Squadron RAF Association.
Tommy was the first Stirling citizen to be awarded honorary membership of the association - the highest honour it can bestow - in appreciation of his support.
Now, however, his name has been put forward by local group Plean Community Spirit (there is no Plean Community Council at the present time) as an address within a new housing development.
Stirling Council planners said:“The suggestion is to name the roads in the developmentTommy Brookes Way and Rowan Drive. The first name commemorates the late, former Provost, Tommy Brookes who is widely recognised as having been a hard-working councillor for the former Sauchenford Ward over many years.
“The proposal Rowan simply continues the use of tree types in the naming of streets locally.”
