Aaliyah is star of show for Central at nationals

-

Central AC’s under 15 athletes were on superb form as they made the trip north to Aberdeen for the Scottish age group championships last weekend with three medals and a host of excellent performances.

Aaliyah McCloud was star of the day for Central, winning the girls 300m in a superb championship and club record.

The 14-year-old Queen Victoria School pupil came into the event as top-ranked athlete but was up against strong opposition.

After qualifying fastest in 42.20 in the heats she had some work to do in the final as she entered the home straight in a close contest.

However she then found another gear as she pulled away and stormed home in a superb 40.13 to win by a huge 1.6 second margin and take the gold, her first ever in a Scottish championship.

This time not only smashed the club’s under 15 record, it also broke the under 17 record, the championship record and places her third on the Scottish all time list for the age group.

Central’s long jumpers were on form as the club came away with silver medals in both the boys and girls events. Dylan McCulloch was in a close battle for second place in the boys long jump before leaping to 4.72m in the fifth round to secure the silver. This was a first Scottish medal for the 14-year-old Lornshill Academy pupil.

Loren Stewart from Callander was also in a close battle for the medals.

After a first round foul she leapt into second place with 4.71m in the second round. She then took the lead in round five with 4.86m before being pipped by just one cm in the final round.

She can still be proud of her silver medal, her first ever Scottish medal, and still aged 13 will be able to return as an under 15 next year to improve on this result.

Earlier Loren had equalled her pb in the high jump with a clearance of 1.44m for fifth place.

Other results included: Jamie Connor (personal bests in 300m and 80m hurdles events - 7th in 300m with 43.92s and the 5th in 80m hurdles in 14.91s); Connie Bateman (9th in the long jump with 4.25m and 12th in the shot with 7.07m); Lewis Miller (12.82s in the 100m and pb in the 200m with 26.31s); Niamh McKinlay (15th in the 800m in 2:30.50)
