Guitar man plucks inspiration from air

When a brainwave hit a Bannockburn musician as he was driving home he had to make a quick stop to capture it.

Brian Cattigan pulled into a car park to record the chorus of his new single ‘I Can’t Be That One You Want’ on his iPhone with the help of his wife Jenna.

The couple had been travelling back from a day out with their two young children.

Brian, who works as a plumber during the day, said: “The chorus came to me while we were driving home, so I stopped at a store car park in Whins of Milton. I wanted a better grasp of it.

“Jenna held up the iPhone for me to record it.

“I really wanted to make sure I captured it. I thought it had a lot of potential.

“I didn’t have a lot of time on my hands to do anything with it straight away, so I sat on it for a month.

“However, when I picked it back up again it didn’t take me long to write the rest of song.”

‘I Can’t Be That One You Want’ was recorded with the backing of band instruments at Falkirk’s Waterfront Studios.

Thirty-seven-year-old Brian played all the instruments on the song himself apart from the drums which were played by long-time friend Iain Kirkpatrick from Stirling.

He added: “It was a weekend of throwing ideas around – and also the first time I had picked up an electric guitar in 10 years, opposed to the acoustic, and I loved it.”

Brian describes the song as having a Northern Soul flavour. It follows ‘Tell Me Something’ which was released earlier this year.

The former Bannockburn High School pupil started playing the guitar aged 13 and began writing songs a few years later.

He said his mum Jennifer - who played him John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’ and Billie Jo Spears’ ‘Blanket on The Ground’ on guitar – was a big musical influence on him when he was growing up.

Brian is currently appearing at McQue’s in Bannockburn regularly as a ‘DJ’ an as well as singing and playing the guitar.

He also plays acoustic shows at Stirling’s Molly Malone’s pub in Maxwell Place now and again and hopes to release a new single later this year.
