Wolves show their mettle in close finish

-

Stirling County Wolves welcomed supporters from both sides back to Bridgehaugh for the first home game.

In the first twenty minutes Biggar had the majority of possession and made it count, especially through their fast running backs with two tries and one conversion taking the score to 0-12.

Stirling showed some real commitment and fought their way back in to the game, with the captain Shaun MacDonald leading the way to score to make it 7-12 on the 30 minute mark.

Four minutes later with a clean catch at the line out, the forwards drove as one over the line with the young hooker Callum Hunter coming up with the biggest smile from beneath the pile of players. Three minutes later and County played the same card, this time it was Andrew Rutherford that went over to score to lead 19-12 at the break.

Biggar were the leagues winners last season, so they worked hard to re-assert their early dominance and five minutes into the second half they secured the points with their own push over try. Jonny Hope then continued to keep Stirling in front with a successful penalty kick.

However, with an interception by Biggar and then a failed kick to space, Biggar were able to put into action their impressive backs to take the score to 2231. Stirling again showed their mettle, playing to the full 80 minutes and with strong inter-play between backs and forwards Jonny Hope was able to score a magnificent try and then convert, to take the score to 29 -31.

This week they take on Ayr and the game will be played on Friday night at Bridgehaugh. Kick off 7.30pm.
