Fast-paced race as runners return Butchart on top form in highly-competitive event

- CHRIS MARZELLA

Stirling’s popular 10k race returned to the city at the weekend as more than 300 runners pounded the city streets.

It made a welcome return after last year’s race was cancelled due to the pandemic.

For its twentieth edition, runners started and finished the event at The PEAK, on Sunday morning.

Due to ongoing Covid restrictions, there was a smaller field than usual. However, 307 runners completed the route in what was a highly-competitive race.

Race director Colin Sinclair said: “With the strong support from Active Stirling, Stirling Council, the University of Stirling and Police Scotland, we delivered a highly competitive race, expertly marshalled by a team of volunteers from

Central AC, who were up with the lark to ensure the event went smoothly. Ideal weather conditions made for a super-fast race, we had barely finished our coffee when we saw the lead car bringing the race in.

“We had an Olympic finalist on the start line in Andrew Butchart and he flew round the course in just over 29 minutes, pursued by James Donald and Ally Hay – all three dipping under the 30-minute mark in the men’s race. Equally impressive was Jenny Bannerman, taking the women’s race by a second from Central’s Jennifer Wetton, both well under 36 mins, just ahead of Jose Wren Golder who completed the podium for the Scottish Championships.

“It was a privilege to be able to stage the event and the work done by many members of the club at Central meant that we were able to bring top-level sport to the city once again.”

The race was sponsored by Mix Innovations, Tunnock’s and Strathmore.
