Grow your skills at tree sessions

The TreeLink Woodland Group has arranged a series of activities in the Old Harbour Woods, between Riverside and Forthside. Each event will be on the second Saturday of the month.

Participants are being asked to meet at the two pillars at the start of the woodland path beside the Riverside Quay student flats (FK8 1HZ) at 10am. There will be two more events at Old Harbour Woods this year.

Tree coppicing takes place on Saturday November 13 from 10am-1pm.

After an induction on safe tool use, volunteers can help to thin some of the young trees on site, to make space for others to grow and let light into the ground layer of the woods. The brash produced will also be used to make dead hedges to prevent erosion on the steep slopes.

The event is not appropriate for children under 12, however under 16-year-olds are welcome if closely supervised by a parent/carer.

Treelink is also hosting green woodworking on Saturday December 11 from 10am-1pm. Spokesperson Paul Dumbleton said: “Join us at this session to make simple, greenwood stools, and use the shave horse to create mallets and tent pegs (perfect as festive gifts).”

There will be canopy cover in case of rain. Bring a hot drink and/or snack to keep you going. There will also be a box for voluntary donations to help pay the workshop leader and all ages are welcome, with under 14-year-olds to be supervised by parent/carer.

In October Treelink held a tree seed collection and planting event in Old Harbour Woods, which went well despite the rain.
