Race to bridge funding gap to help little Mylo

- ALASTAIR MCNEILL

The parents of a Stirling tot with a rare genetic disorder are hoping to bridge a funding gap to provide him with a specially designed bedroom.

Two-year-old Mylo Scougall cannot walk and his speech is limited due to UNC80 Hypotonia.

His family have been told if he does manage to walk in future it will only be with the aid of a walking frame.

Mum Cara and dad David are appealing for £40,000 to help fund an adapted bedroom with wetroom for Mylo at their Braehead home.

A £20,000 grant has been made by Stirling Council towards the total cost of £60,000.

So far Mylo’s appeal has raised £16,000 with the latest, and largest, donation of £1000 from Stirling-based housebuilder Robertson Homes this week.

Other donations have come from fundraising events and individual donations.

A ‘Mylo’s Winter Ball Fundraiser’ is set to take place later this month at Stirling County Rugby Club.

Cara and David are aiming to keep the fundraising drive going in the coming months.

Cara said this week: “We’ve been overwhelmed by people’s generosity. We really can’t thank them enough.

“The sum of £16,000 is a massive figure and we’re extremely grateful, but there is still a lot of money needed.

“It’s quite daunting, especially when Mylo is not getting any younger.

“He is growing all the time and it is getting difficult to lift him.

“It’s a race against time. He will be three and a half next summer when we hope to have a suitable adapted bedroom for him.

“We just have to keep the fundraising momentum going.”

The housebuilder is also asking visitors to its showhomes across Scotland to leave messages of support for Mylo.

Robertson Homes sales and marketing director Sharon Spinelli said: “As well as financial help, knowing other people are aware of Mylo and wishing him well means the world to his family.

“This is why we have opened special ‘Message for Mylo’ books in all our show homes so our visitors can send their own best wishes and words of encouragement in the books which will be given to Mylo’s family.

“Despite his many difficulties, Mylo is the sweetest, most loving little boy and brightens up everyone’s day.

“We are helping raise awareness of his condition, in the hope his family can reach their target more quickly.”

Mylo’s fundraiser is being organised by the Sullivan’s Heroes charity which offers support and financial assistance for families raising essential funds for vital home adaptations for a disabled child, to continue to care for their child at home.
