Small is beautiful as Stirling art exhibition and workshops open
Made in Stirling launches an exhibition this month featuring the work of Falkirk artist Frances Ryan.
It is entitled‘Small Works’and will explore everyday experiences from Friday April 15.
Frances is an award-winning collage artist who has exhibited in shows in Scotland, London, Belgium, and the USA.
In 2019 she won the Visual Arts Scotland Studio Faire Residency Award and was also an award winner in the Kanyer Art Collection online open competition.
She said:“Small things have the potential to become something much larger.
“Whether that be an unspoken worry that can grow out of proportion in our minds, or the small actions that on their own can seem insignificant but when repeated many times or carried out by many people they can really bring about the potential for great change on an individual level or within wider society.
“My work has been described as poetic and emotional and it often revolves around situations and characters both real and imagined, bringing a narrative to life”.
Frances and the curatorial team at Made in
Stirling have devised a range of workshops and courses around themes of place and memory inspired by the exhibition, including two collage making workshops, an all-day image transfer and collage course, and two free drop-in sessions to celebrate World Collage Day on Saturday May 14.
Participants will be asked to bring along visual memories or favourite things about Stirling to produce a collaborative piece of work.
Workshops and the day course are accessible to any skill set in art.
Made in Stirling director Paul Jenkins said: “We are so excited to celebrate world collage day this year with Frances Ryan in Gallery One.
“Since lockdown, all of us have understood the importance of the small things in life. Here at Made in Stirling we believe in the beauty of the micro and the power of the creative community, and we are so happy to be able to support this exhibition, and for Fran to have the opportunity to work with others to cultivate new creative works and to learn all about the art of collage.”
