Dear Editor

On Saturday, April 2, Torbrex Community Choir presented an evening of light entertainment in the Park Church.

This was its first spring concert since the start of the covid pandemic.

The programme had a very upbeat feel throughout, with items from shows, musicals and operas, all old favourites making a familiar, welcoming programme.

The singing of the Ukrainian national anthem provided a few moments of reflection and empathy with the sad plight of these people.

Soloists from the choir were Elaine Steele, who wowed the audience when she sang Vilia from The Merry Widow, and Mary Toal who captivated them with Schubert’s Ave Maria. Joyce Macfarlane gave the singing voices of the choir a rest as she read a few entertaining poems.

The choir sang with great enthusiasm enhanced by Grant Brown with his expert drumming with many of the songs. During another brief interlude, a few brave members entertained all present with an intriguing version of the Tennessee Wig-walk.

A fitting climax for the concert was the choir singing Easter Parade, assisted by their own Fred and Judy walking through the church in their finery, with all the ladies in the front row of the choir wearing an Easter Bonnet.

The success of the evening owed much to the splendid accompanying of Elizabeth Boyd and the dedication of their conductor Genevieve Graham.

So far, the money raised, which is all going to the Ukraine appeal, has exceeded £2000. Well done, Torbrex Community Choir!

A delighted audience member
