Unbeaten run keeps ladies top

- RJ MITCHELL

Bridge of Allan Sports Club Ladies’ side have managed to keep their ‘invincible’ unbeaten squash season on track after surviving a major challenge from Grange firsts in Edinburgh.

The Birds and the Bees sponsoredclub claimed a points back victory after the match was tied at two wins each but BOASC triumphed 8-6 on games countback.

The victory safeguarded their leadership of the East of Scotland Division One ahead of this week’s pivotal trip to second placed Edinburgh University.

Relieved captain Sheena Logan, an impressive 3-0 winner at No.4 said: “Without doubt this was our hardest match of the season and fortunately our depth of quality got us through.

“At No.1 Sabine Mackenzie fought all the way before going down in straight games to Mhairi Charlton who is one of the strongest top of the orders in the league if not the strongest and then Cat Smith had an absolutely epic fivegame match at No.2 before losing a real nail-biter of a fifth game.

“Fortunately Katy Temple managed to win 3-0 and I came through in similar fashion and we got the win and also kept the gap between ourselves and Edinburgh University to 13 points.

“With us travelling to the University to face them this week it was great to come through such a stern test.”

She added: “We are under no illusion as to how tough this match will be. The students will have their strongest side out and they know that if they can beat us convincingly the title race is right back on.

“So without doubt this match mean it really is all on the line when it comes to the title.”

Meanwhile the Bofa men’s second team have moved into third place in Division Two with a fine 3-1 victory at Grange thirds that moves them into the fringes of the promotion race just three points adrift of leaders Watsonians firsts.

Captain Martin Jack, an imperious straight game winner at No.4, said: “Any win at Grange is one that you need to treasure and we were delighted to do it in such a convincing fashion.

“In particular young Ollie Hunter continues to improve and mature at the top of the order and posted another impressive 3-0 win. Andy Meldrum is clearly coming back to his best and was emphatic in also posting a straight games win.

“I also need to mention James Stewart who fought all the way at No.3 before going down in five tough games.

“Now we have the visit of Heriot Watt University seconds and they are fighting for survival in second bottom slot so we know we are in for another tester.”

In Division One the first team travel to ESC thirds hungry for match action after the postponement of last week’s fixture.
