Cake baking trio raise funds for war victims
A trio of youngsters in Callander have helped with an appeal to send much-needed supplies to Ukrainians fleeing war.
Last month we told how generous townsfolk had donated more than two tonnes of essential items to be sent to aid those fleeing the Russian invasion. The MNV offices, in Stirling Road, was set up as an established drop-off location by Mary and Richard Johnson.
The collection point saw donations flood in and subsequently transported across Europe.
To get the goods to Ukraine, Mr and Mrs Johnson hired a Slovakian courier to transport the goods to eastern Slovakia, where the local council in Spisska Nova Ves took the goods over the border to the Ukrainian town of Tyachiv. To pay for the transport they issued an appeal and within 48 hours had raised over £3000.
Donations are still being collected and two loads have now been dispatched to Slovakia and another load was to be sent on Monday.
To cover the transport costs for the latest shipment, they had continued to raise money within the Callander community. To help with the fund raising, three young Callander girls – Maiya Gall, 12, Georgie Gall, 9, and Megan O’brien, 9, baked cup cakes and set up a stall outside their house to sell them, raising £126.53 towards the figure.
Mr Johnson said:“to cover the transport costs we have been raising money from the Callander community and so far we have raise over £6,500 which is far beyond what we expected and so generous.”
Last month, Mr Johnson told the Observer:“people were very generous, giving food, clothes, blankets, toiletries and soft toys.
“We also had donations from Aberfoyle, Balquhidder, Killin and Tillicoultry.
“All of the donations were sorted, bagged and boxed ready for transporting to Ukraine.”
Among the items collected were – medical supplies; over- thecounter medications for adults and children; first-aid kits; sanitary products for women; hygiene products for adults and children; sleeping bags, yoga mats, pillows; batteries; torches and candles; nonperishable food items; baby/toddler food items ranging from formula to purees; snack food; paper/ plastic plates, cups and cutlery; bottles of water; kettles; and children’s clothing.
