A report by the Chief Constable showed that in Stirling Burgh in 1939 there were 25 pubs, five hotels, one ‘porter and ales house’ and 15 licensed grocers.

This was the equivalent of one licensed premises for every 491 people in the burgh, based on the population for the burgh given in the 1931 census.

In the previous 12 months, police dealt with 93 cases of drunkenness and offences relating to it, down four compared with the previous year. Officers also made 555 visits to licensed premises in the course of the year and ‘generally speaking found them to be well conducted’, according to the Chief Constable.
