Squash teamare aiming fortitle

- RJ MITCHELL

Bridge of Allan Sports Club’s ladies squash team, sponsored by the Birds and Bees, need just six points from their meeting with Edinburgh Sports Club to retain the East of Scotland Ladies Division One title.

The Minewood girls play second placed Edinburgh University in the final match of the season next week but know that a victory in the capital tonight (Wednesday) will almost certainly be enough.

The team - captain Sheena Logan, Cat Smith, Sabine Mackenzie and Katy Temple - have lost just one match all season.

“Everyone is in good form and injury free and ready to give it their best shot,” said Sheena.

“Sports Club are bottom of the table but if they can get a win against us they still have a chance of staying up and that will make them dangerous.

“So it is all about each of us producing a strong performance on the night and hopefully that will be enough.”

The ladies have been further boosted by the news that Cat Smith has been picked to play for the Scotland over-35 team at the Home Internationals in Galway.

Meanwhile the men’s first team’s season came to a disappointing end when an under-strength side, missing Scotland under-17 and 19 champion Kyle Penman, were hammered 3-1 by Heriot Watt University I to consign them to a mid-table Division One finish.

Scotland No.4 Fergus Richards was the only winner with James Dougan, captain Robin Bairner and Chris Turlik all losing and Bairner groaned: “It was a disappointing way to end what has been a challenging season in more ways than one but I guess the most important thing is that we have got competitive squash back up and running.”

Meanwhile in Division Two the seconds’ hopes of claiming the title were scuppered when Watsonians I hammered Grange 2 4-0 to take the title by 12 points leaving the Minewood men a highly creditable second.
