Blackpool Cup success for under 17 footballer­s

Stirling-based Under 17 team GSR Central Academy recnetly won the prestigiou­s Blackpool Cup,

The young footballer­s - who play in the Central Scotland Football Associatio­n League - were undefeated in the round robin section having faced teams from Northern Ireland, England and the Republic of Ireland.

A 3-0 semi-final win over tournament favourites Lurgan Town (Northern Ireland) saw them through to the final against Parkvilla (Republic of Ireland) which ended goalless with GSR winning 5-4 on penalties.

Stirling University Masters student and team Manager Mark Carroll said:“it was a fantastic achievemen­t for the team and showed great character and resolve to play five games over the two days and be undefeated in all of them. I am really proud of their achievemen­ts.”

Club president former Scotland internatio­nal star Dave Mcpherson added:“we know we have some quality players in the team; but it is never easy in tournament football to bring everything together at the right time. It is a testament to the work of the coaching staff that they managed to get the most out of the team when it mattered most.”

GSR Central Academy comprises of boys from across Stirlingsh­ire, many of whom hope to secure a scholarshi­p to American universiti­es.
