Mary (94) on mend after fall on paving

Great-gran is healing well

- CHRIS MARZELLA

A 94-year-old Killearn woman is on the mend after suffering shocking injuries when she tripped over an uneven pavement in the village last month.

Last week we told how Mary Crawford lost her footing and fell on Main Street in the village, suffering a double fracture to her arm and a badly broken nose.

With a broken radius and ulna in her lower arm, a broken nose and cuts and bruises, the greatgrandmother lay on the pavement in agony, awaiting medical treatment, for over an hour.

Mary was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital where she spent several nights being treated before being released. She was due a follow-up appointment this week to assess the injuries.

This week her relieved family revealed that she has been given a positive diagnosis after a follow-up appointment.

Daughter-in-law Carol said: “Mary was at the fracture clinic and is healing well. She got an X-ray and a lightweight cast on, so that should make things easier for her. The consultant said if she were younger they would manipulate the position for a better heal, however at her age he wouldn’t want to put her through that discomfort.

“Recovery time should be another six weeks.”

Last week we reported how Stirling Council carried out an immediate repair on the section of wonky pavement following calls from Mary’s family to make the section safe.

Mary, described by her family as being very independent, had been walking toward her local Coop from her home in Beech Drive when she fell.

Following the fall, Carol told the Observer: “When we heard what had happened and went down to check on her we got a big shock over the extent of her injuries. She’s 94 but is a very independent woman and still gets about fairly well by herself. She had been walking to the shops and tripped over the pavement.

“She’s now living with us and recovering. But if she had hit her head harder or broken a hip then things could have been much worse.

“This is a warning for people to be very careful on the uneven and broken pavements around the village.”

A spokesperson for Stirling Council last week said: “Our sympathies are with the lady following this incident and we wish her a speedy recovery.

“Our officers visited this site as soon as the issue was raised with the council and an immediate repair has been carried out.

“We would encourage residents to report pavement and road defects through the forms on our website so the council can act to avoid incidents like this in the future.”
