ANGLING SWANSWATER

The weather remained cool with an east wind for most of the week. There were some sunny spells and Friday, when the wind changed, it was very warm.

The fish were near the surface when it was overcast, going deeper in the sunshine. Towards the end of the week fish could be seen moving everywhere and gorging on small black flies.

Those wanting to imitate these flies needed to go to a size 20 dry fly to catch fish. Other successful patterns included Buzzers, Spider, Diawl Bach, Green

Nymph, Blob, Dancer, and Bloodworm.

Plenty of different coloured fish feature in the catch returns this week – both from the main pond and the bait pond – with Blues, Golds, Browns and Tigers are all being landed along with the usual topquality Rainbows.

On the bait pond, most of the fish were taken on spinners, maggots or power bait with the fish generally around 2 to 3 feet down.

LAKE OF MENTEITH

Buzzertastic at the Lake at the moment. The water is fishing at its best so far this season – if not for a couple of seasons. Some tremendous catches at the moment with boat catches in the 30s fairly common. All on buzzers in the eastern basin.

CRICKET

Stirling County had a false start to the 2022 season when they travelled to Ferguslie for their opening Western Union Premier League fixture last Saturday.

With both teams ready for the noon start, the rain started to fall, delaying play - and within a couple of hours it was clear that there would be no prospect of play.

They will be hoping for better luck tomorrow (Saturday) in their first home league match of the season when Uddingston visit New Williamfield. The match begins at noon.

The club’s 2nd XI are playing in Western Union Division Four and amazingly, they managed to complete their match at New Williamfield last Saturday despite inclement weather around the Stirling area.

Stirling batted first against The Tryst (Stenhousemuir 2nds) scoring 191 from their alloted 40 overs. Their opponents ended 53 runs short on 138 for seven. Tomorrow, they are away to Anniesland.

SAILING

Loch Ard Sailing Club recently started the sailing season a little differently with trophies for last year’s racing being awarded at the club, as Covid restrictions had prevented in-person presentations in January with the AGM on Zoom.

Members enjoyed a pleasant afternoon talking sailing, and looking forward to the coming season, which has a full racing programme, and activities for leisure sailors, canoeists and kayakers.
