Murray’s illness KOS Djokovic clash

-

The long-awaited match between Andy Murray and his old rival Novak Djokovic was put on hold after the Dunblane ace had to pull out of his match at the Madrid Open because of illness.

The 34-year-old was scheduled to play in the third round of the event yesterday but a statement from the tournament organisers said: “Unfortunately, Andy Murray is unable to take to the Manolo Santana Stadium due to illness.”

It would have been the first time the pair had met on court since 2017 when Djokovic beat Murray in the final at Doha in the deciding set.

Murray‘s last win over the world No. 1came in the final of the ATP finals in London in 2016. The Scot reached the third round at Madrid after a fine win over Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, ranked world number 16.

Murray produced a high level to win 6-1 3-6 6-2 against the man who beat him at Wimbledon last year. In the first round he was up against 2020

US Open champion Dominic Thiem who is making a comeback after eight months out with a wrist injury.

In his first win on clay since June 2017, the impressive Murray won 6-3 6-4.

Brother Jamie is in the doubles quarter-final at Madrid with New Zealand’s Michael Venus.
