Krazy Kuts stores open

-

Shoppers were promised a wide range of goods at low prices when a re-branded store opened in May 1969.

Manager of Krazy Kuts William Graham was pictured alongside a busy display packed with household favourites.

Scottish Co-operative Retail Services opened two Krazy Kuts stores, one run by Mr Graham in Hillpark and one in Cowie.

The advent of Krazy Kuts heralded the end of the road for the Co-op’s famous ‘divi’ (dividend) payment in which loyal shoppers received a biannual share of the company’s profits based on the quantity of goods they had bought from their stores.

The divi was launched in 1844 but died out in the 1960s and 70s before being revived by the Co-op in 2004.

The Observer said: ‘The customer now gets her dividend in her hand by way of reduced prices on the goods for sale instead of waiting to get it in a lump sum as was done in the past.’

According to the paper, customers liked the store’s new layout and accessibility of all the goods. It had late opening until 7pm on Thursdays and 9pm each Friday.

Mr Graham said he and staff would be working to ensure the ‘familiarity’ that existed with customers in the old shop was not lost.
