GOLF STIRLING

Eight places were up for grabs for Qualificat­ion in the matchplay stages of the King George V at the weekend.

Friday players (61) had the worst of the playing conditions, with gusting winds in excess of 40mph, whilst the Saturday players (162) enjoyed a moderate breeze and mainly sunshine all day.

Remarkably three of the eight qualifiers were Friday players and two managed to win Division 1 and 3.

Gordon Mcgown – playing on Friday – had a game of two halves with 41/35. A front nine was compiled with a double bogey at 3 and bogeys at 4, 6 and 8. A tidy back nine was carded with eight pars and a closing birdie. Gordon won Div1 by three strokes.

Ex-profession­al footballer and now coach at Dundee Utd, Brian Grant, took second place with a net 70 beating Jamie Leslie and David Dryland on the better inward half (bih)

Brian – off 9 – had nothing worse than a bogey on the card with seven pars on the back nine and bogeys at 12 and 15.

Jamie Leslie did similar with 10 pars and eight bogeys in half ’s of 41/39. David made a birdie/birdie start to record halves of 38/39. Alan Hiddleston beat Willie Kerr on the bih with both players on net 68 in Division 2. Alan stumbled with a 8, 3, 5, 5 start to open with front nine of 43. However, the 13 handicappe­r stormed home in two over par 38 with seven pars and bogeys at 11 and 12.

Willie was going along nicely until a treble bogey at the difficult 9th hole for 41. However, he bounced back with a birdie 2 at 10 and a back nine of 40.

The evergreen Trevor Boyd highlights were birdies at 2 and 18. An ugly run of 6, 4, 6 at holes 7, 8 and 9 shedded 5 strokes with a closing net 70.

Past Captain William Mcquillan returned the best net of the weekend with a 65 on Friday. The highlights for the 24 handicappe­r six pars 2, 3, 6, 8, 13 and 14 in half ’s of 43/46.

William was reduced to 21.2 and won Division 3.

David Lyon – also playing on Friday – had an excellent net 67 off 22 with a great front nine of 42. A 6, 5, 7 finish made up the inward 47. And senior member and past captain Derek Anderson was third on net 69 with half ’s 48/46. Derek will rue dropping 10 strokes at three holes 7@3rd, 8@5th and 7&10th.

David Kernohan beat Jas Donaldson on the bih in the Scratch sweep both players on three under par 69. Both players had hauls of six birdies David 35/34 v Jas 34/35 .

Ben Liddell was 3rd on 72 with a birdie birdie finish .

This Saturday the ladies play the Open Tri-am format for the Festival Trophy.#

On Sunday the club hosted the Wilson Salver, Open Gents Greensomes with a full entry from 07.30 to 14.30.

Over 35 clubs from all over Scotland were represente­d. It was a tight affair with the first three places decided on the better inward half.

Vice Captain Thomas Stewart and partner Robbie Robertson returned 32 1/2 to pip Callum Croal and Gerry Mccormack both The Carrick at Loch Lomond into second with another Stirling pairing Drew Fowler and Sean Mcauley in 3rd.

Thomas and Robbie score was built on a run of nine pars from holes 4 to 12. Dropping two strokes at 13&15 in half’s of 38/38.

Callum Croall and Gerry Mccormack both from The Carrick at Loch Lomond took 2nd the highlight a run of 3s at 8,9,10 in half ’s of 39/41.

Home players Drew Fowler and Sean Mcauley made a blistering start 3 under par after two holes with a birdie, eagle start only to give them back with interest with double bogeys at 3&4 followed by another birdie, then par, par, birdie, birdie finish for a front nine of 34. An inward 38 made up the level par round of 72.

Roland Fleming (+2 Stirling) and David Findlay (1, Alloa ) took the leading scratch with a one under par round of 71 with birdies at 8&18 and only one dropped stroke at 10 in half ’s of 35/36

STIRLING LADIES

On Tuesday, May 10, the winner of the Ladies Mckenzie Cup Qualifier was Margaret Neilson with net 74. Second was Susan Macleod net 74 and third Wendy Donaldson net 76. The others who qualified for this year’s knock out competitio­n are Aileen Lee (79), Elaine Whiteford (80), Shelagh Quinn (83), Nancy Thomas (85) and Anne Thomson (85). The matches will be played throughout the season.

The Nine Hole Stableford on May 10 was won by Helen Appleby with 17 points. Second was Frances Mcmillan 10 points and third Fiona Campbell 10 points.

On Saturday, May 14, the 18 Hole Stableford was won by Pat Cockshoot with 38 points. Second was Fiona Anderson with 26 points and third Nancy Thomas with 25 points.

Alison Davidson has continued her last few weeks of great golf playing off a handicap of - 1 with great rounds including scoring 36 points and an Eagle on the 9th hole on the Saturday Stableford on May 7.

This great form has continued with Alison beating off stiff competitio­n in the Stirling and Clackmanna­n Ladies County Championsh­ips 2022 played at Grangemout­h Golf Club 6 - May 13. After three rounds of strong competitio­n, Alison met up with Margo Gardiner, also of Stirling Golf Club, in the Final. Alison won 4 & 2 after a very close, exciting worthy final. Congratula­tions to Alison who is also now playing off a handicap of - 1.5.

BRIDGE OF ALLAN

Another well attended weekend of competitio­ns at Bridge of Allan saw some challengin­g conditions on the course with the wind strengths appearing to be stronger than anticipate­d. That said, there were a number of good performanc­es which were good enough to take the spoils in the different competitio­ns.

On Friday, the 9 Hole Senior Stableford was won by Mike Smith, returning a stableford score of 21 points. John Breslin’s score of 19 points was only good enough for second, just finishing ahead of Stephen Mcnally after a countback.

Saturday saw the first round of the Strokeplay shield, which will be awarded to the player with the best 3 round total after the 4 rounds have been completed. Angus Steven took first place in Division 1 returning a nett score of 63 shots. Jamie Drummond was second with 66 shots and

Simon Lyall finished 3rd with a nett score of 67. In Division 2, Stuart Reid finished top of the pile with a nett score of 61. Ronnie Mcmurray took second spot with a score of 67 and Edward Fotheringh­am’s score of 68 was good enough for third spot.

DUNBLANE NEW

Eventually the weather on Saturday matched what it should have been for the Spring Meeting.

Best Scratch Score was a level par 69 from Chris Gater with birdies at 2, 6, 11 and 14 and bogeys at 1, 7, 9 and 10.

In the First Class Derek Blues (10) returned to form of yesteryear to win with 64 finished off with a birdie at 18. Runner up was Rocco Purves (7) on 65 with birdies at 4, 6 and 15 but a bogey at 18. Third place went to Stuart Jackman (10) with a steady round of 66 with 11 pars and 7 bogeys. Alastair Macrae (8) edged fourth place on 67 and a BIH, including birdies at 12, 15, 16 and 18, than Vinny O’holloran (6) who did birdie 16.

John Connolly (16) won the Second Class on 63 with birdie 2’s at 14 and 16. Runner up was Alan Murray (11) on 64 with a birdie at 16 but a double bogey at 10. Damian Alexander (15) was third on 66 finishing with a birdie at 18 after double bogeys at 10, 13 and 16 to edge ahead of Hamish Mckay (16) on 67 who had double bogeys at 10, 13 and 18.

Despite a double bogey at 18 Andy Wilson (18) won the Third Class on 63. Richard Lyons (18) took second spot on 65 and a BIH than Steven Macalliste­r (19) who unfortunat­ely had a double bogey at 18. Fourth place went to first out in the morning, Hamish Donald (17) on 66 highlighte­d by a birdie at 14.

There was a good turnout for the Stableford on Wednesday.

The First Class was won by John Currie (13) with 42 points with a birdie at 14. Runner up was Gerry Wilson (16) on 41 points and a BIH than Farquhar Maclean (15) who had a double bogey at 15 for no points. Fourth place went to Kenny Gibson (10) on 40 points after a steady round of 12 pars and 6 bogeys.

With the best round of the day Alex Sneddon (21) won the Second Class on 43 points. Runner up was Alan Cessford (24) on 40 points and a BIH, despite a triple bogey at 12 and double bogeys at 11 and 17, than Keith Ellington (20) who had double bogeys at 13, 16 and 17. Tom Casey (22) took fourth place on 38 points.

Next Wednesday (18th) is the Qualifying Round off white tees for the Arnold Mcculloch Trophy with the top 32 net scores proceeding to Match Play.

Next Friday and Saturday will be the Hydro Cup.

BOWLS STIRLING COUNTY

Following their disappoint­ing opening result the previous week, Stirling County bowlers struck top form on Saturday with a resounding win over Renfrewshi­re.

In the Hamilton Trophy encounter at Paisley’s Hawkhead green County finished with five winning rinks as they carded a 23-shot victory.

David Ferguson’s four were 33-17 winners over John Fleming; Sandy Deans four finished 27-17 ahead of Sandy Wotherspoo­n; while Willie Black and company won 18-11 against Derek Moffat.

Elsewhere Gary Malcolmson skipped his team to a 19-17 win over David Horne; Kevan Frogley finished 20-17 ahead of Stephen Lowrie, while Pat Martin’s four lost 8-21 to Alan Mclean. Totals: Stirling County West 125, Renfrewshi­re West 102.

This Saturday’s Scottish Counties Championsh­ip match goes ahead at the Causewayea­d green when County West line up in their local derby against Clackmanna­n and Kinross.

STIRLING

Saturday’s annual match between Stirling and Cambusbarr­on for custody of the Centenary Cup resulted in victory for Stirling by 26 shots.

Five triples participat­ed with Pat Neilson winning 23-9 over David Muir; Bruce Mclachlan winning 15-9 against Henry Stark; Drew Laird 15-7 up over Darren Liddell; Sandy Kerr drawing 11-11 with Keiron Whitton while Jim Mclachlan lost 10-13 to Norrie Gilmour. Totals: Stirling 74, Cambusbarr­on 48.

ABERFOYLE

Aberfoyle Bowling Club’s recent Ladies Day competitio­n, sponsored by Stewart Mcdonald Plant Ltd, was well attended by clubs from around the district. This year’s winners were the home pairing of Gina Howieson and Leslie who defeated Lillian Ayre and Helen Campbell on the last bowl.
