FISHING LAKE OF MENTEITH

The finest fishing has returned today with a lovely mild overcast day and gentle breeze setting the stage for great buzzer and dry fly fishing in the Eastern Basin. Ronnie Glass said that the buzzers weren’t working for their boat and they 18 on dries with by far the greatest congregation of fish in International Bay. Other anglers did well on fabs and boobies. One other regular stated that it was the best rise he had ever seen.

This week sees the Scottish Polis National Championship on Thursday immediately followed by a Scottish National Fly fishing Championship Heat on the Friday – we will try and keep them further apart next year.

A good excuse to show this picture of Stewart Inglis again is to announce that he has agreed to be captain of the 16 strong Scotland team which has annual matches with the English Fly Fishing Association Select Team alternating between the Lake and Rutland Water in July. He is now the man to speak to with organisational queries.

The flow of Ladies to the Lake in readiness for the international next week has started. Great to see an international here again and look forward to seeing new and old faces again after the Covid interruption.

SWANSWATER

It was an unsettled week weather-wise with some heavy showers and strong winds at times. Water temperature is hovering around 12 Centigrade and water clarity remains excellent.

The fish were generally in the top 2-3 feet and well spread out round the pond. The large hatch of black gnats that the fish were gorging themselves on has almost finished, to be replaced by hawthorn flies and sedges and an occasional mayfly.

Some anglers were trying out dry flies with varying success but most of the fish were taken on lures and nymphs. Favourite patterns this week included Cat’s Whisker, Yellow Dancer, Cormorants, Black Beetles and Buzzers.

Bait anglers were rewarded with some excellent bags, generally on power bait and spinning. Most of the fish were taken at the far end of the bait pond, although some are now being caught at the inflows.

The fishery is open from 8am-9pm every day except Thursday when we close at 2.30pm.
