Central youngsters collect East medals

There was success for Central AC athletes as the East District Championsh­ips returned for the first time in three years recenty.

The Grangemout­h tracks hosted medal events at Under 13, Under 15, Under 17 while Under 20 and senior athletes took part in a Scottish national open event where no medals were up for grabs but personal best performanc­es could still be achieved.

It was at Under 15 level where Central had most success - three golds, five silvers and three bromze medals.

Loren Stewart won gold in the high jump with 1.42m and silvers in the long jump with 4.82m and 300m in a new best time of 44.25s. Dara Clark joined Loren on the podium in the high jump after a clearance of 1.27m for bronze and went on to lead a Central 1-2 in the javelin taking gold with a season’s best throw of 14.56m ahead of Cara Mckinlay who won silver with a season’s best throw of 13.70m.

Lewis Miller took gold in the boys shot with a new best throw of 10 metres. Connie Bateman won a pair of silver medals running a personal best 14.06s in the 75m hurdles and a season’s best throw of 7.92m in the shot. She also placed 10th in the long jump with 4.16m.

Jamie Connor won silver in the boys 80m hurdles with a personal best 14.01s, Scotland cross country internatio­nal Niamh Mckinlay won bronze in a fast paced 1500m just missing her pb with a time of 4:55.99 while Fia Watkin placed fourth in her 800m heat with 2:31.67 and 11th in long jump with 4.08m.

There were also medals from the under 17 age group athletes.

Ruairidh Burns had a busy weekend as he tested himself over 400m hurdles for the first time ever. It paid dividends as he came home in second place for a silver medal in a time of 66.76s, placed fourth in the flat 400m in 54.88s and in the long jump was joined by team mate Dylan Mcculloch.

Dylan took bronze with a new best jump of 5.48m leaving Ruaridh to settle for fourth with 5.42m. Dylan set another pb in the 200m of 24.45s for fourth and just missed his 100m pb with 12.11s.

Andrew Twigg won a silver in the javelin with 17.77m and set a pb in the shot of 7.46m to win bronze. Alex Dunlop won a bronze in the discus with 15.81m and ran 2:33.03 in the 800m. Scotland cross country internatio­nal Catriona Kane was sixth in the 1500m in 4:55.39.

At Under 13, Luca Shepherd won bronze in the 200m with 31.16s, was ninth in the long jump with 3.36m and ran 14.90s in the 100m. Emily Watkin was fifth in the shot with 3.43m and 11th in the long jump with 2.64m. Alexandra Montgomery set a pb 2:53.38 in the 800m for second in her heat.

In the seniors and Under 20s open event, Ellen Montgomery set a new best in the triple jump of 9.47m for sixth and 30.17s at 200m. Ross Lawrie set a pb in the 400m with 58.30s, Ewan Calder just missed his 800m best with 2:04.11 and Finlay Marchant was close to his bests at 100m (12.32s) and 200m (25.88s).
