On fire‘burn hit five past Milngavie in the cup

- SPORTS REPORTER

Bannockburn got the new year off to the perfect start, by progressing to the last 16 of the West of Scotland Cup.

With the proposed tie to Milngavie falling victim to the weather the opponents were happy to switch the tie to St Modans to get it played.

‘Burn pressed forward straight from kick off, with Kenny Mclellan playing in Dylan Mcgowan who raced to the byline to get his cross away.

This was a sign of things to come for ‘Burn but a combination of good goalkeeping and poor decision making ensured the visitors got through the first half hour unscathed and content to frustrate the home side.

The breakthrough came when Mcgowan got to the byline again and cut back to Ryan Millar, who made no mistake inside the six yard box to put the ‘Burn a goal up at the break.

After the break, ‘Burn came out the traps with intent and improved the quality in and around the box and created clearer goals scoring opportunities.

The second goal came on 50 minutes with good interplay by Darren Walker and Mcgowan with the latter flashing it across the box, only for the defender to turn it home with Millar waiting to pounce.

The hour mark brought a triple change and allowed ‘Burn to utilise a strong bench. Wood, Imrie and Donaghy replaced Mcgowan, Mclellan and Mochan. The fresh front three brought new problems for the visiting defence and continued to create chances.

The third goal of the game came from a set piece, after a great delivery from Donaghy onto the head of skipper Kenny Feaks, who made no mistake.

With the visitors running on empty, ‘Burn continued to push for more. Number four came after the ball was cut back to the on rushing Wood to fire home and the final goal of the match was again from a set piece with Donaghy rising to head home after a Millar delivery.
