Service makes net-zero appeal

-

Organisers of a major eco-service are urging people from across Stirling to join them and the city council in trying to achieve net zero.

The call for action came from Stirling Reuse Hub, an innovative warehouse space in Springkerse, dedicated to selling high quality preowned or upcycled furniture, household goods and more.

This followed news the Observer story which revealed that Stirling was ranked in the top 10 cities for carbon emissions in the UK.

Donnawood, opportunities developer Stirling Reuse Hub, said: “Calculating carbon emissions for cities is invariably a tricky process, due to the large number of variables that need to be accounted for. In this particular scenario, the presence of motorways, etc were a major factor in

Stirling’s ranking.

“We know that it will be challenging to achieve net-zero but we are looking forward to offering Stirling residents and businesses options for reducing their carbon footprint and working with the council to help them achieve city-wide objectives.”

In 2018, Stirling Council signed up with SEPA to a Sustainable Growth Agreement and in October 2019, Stirling Council declared a climate emergency.

Four-fifths of Scotland’s carbon footprint arises from products and materials, predominantly associated with consumption of products and services (Zero Waste Scotland).

Consultations with local residents revealed that they hated seeing good things go to waste, and the community was keen to see items that they no longer needed being used by others.

Transition Stirling’s Reuse Hub was opened in March 2022 (led by a steering group which consists of Stirling Council, Forth Environment Link and Recycle-a-bike).

It enables residents to donate their unwanted items directly to the Reuse Hub or items can be dropped off at the collection point at Stirling Council’s Lower Polmaise Household Waste Recycling Centre.

The Hub has diverted approximately 100 tonnes of items in the last ten month.

The Stirling Reuse Hub also provides customers with a large collection of raw materials, spare parts and pre-loved goods ready for a new home, alongside a range of unusual and unique products, made by the people of Stirling.
