Council’s energy saving plan

-

Clackmannanshire Council is launching a competition between schools and early learning centres to save energy.

All public primary schools, secondary schools and early learning centres in Clackmannanshire are eligible to compete to see which establishment can save the most energy compared to the previous year.

The winners of the competition receive cash prizes which are funded using the savings from the competition itself. Previous winners include St Serf ’s Nursery School and Abercromby Primary School.

The financial savings that the programme delivered were double the value of the cash prizes when the council last ran the competition and the significant increases in energy prices mean that the cost-saving potential of the programme is even higher this year.

Councillor Fiona Law, the council’s Spokesperson for Net Zero and the Environment said: “We are thrilled to be re-introducing a programme to deliver emissions savings and cost savings across Clackmannanshire to help minimise waste and get schools involved in our environmental targets.

“We have engaged communities and schools through our Climate Change Forums so this is another way to help young people get involved in action on climate change.”

The competition is part of an approach to reduce emissions and contribute to the council’s target to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, during a period of unprecedented budgetary pressures.

The council is holding regular Climate Change Forums in Menstrie, Alloa, Alva, Dollar and Tullibody for residents, young people, community groups and businesses to find out more about and contribute to the council’s environmental work.
