Songwriter circle hits right notes

- KAIYA MARJORIBANKS

A new songwriters circle in Stirling, which gets together again this weekend, is hitting the right notes with local musicians.

‘Stirling Song Club – Sound On Sessions’ gives local singers an opportunity to showcase their own new material and try out unique cover versions at the monthly club being held at new restaurant and bar King Cons.

The first event held at the end of January proved to be a resounding success with 13 performers from across the local area taking to the stage, with Gerry Son and the Smoking Gun as the ‘featured act’.

The club, which will run the last Sunday of each month, is being organised and hosted by local singer-songwriter Barry Honeyman and music photographer Bazza Mills.

Each act in Stirling Song Club is invited to take part and play a minimum of two songs, with the monthly featured act playing a 2030 minute slot.

Barry, from Bridge of Allan, said: “We were delighted with the success of the first Stirling Song Club which had a really supportive atmosphere, a creative vibe and great musical talent.

“The club is an opportunity for musicians to connect, try out new material and also provide a platform for young aspiring musicians to meet and mingle with experienced acts to network, learn their trade and enhance their stage craft in a friendly environment.

“Stirling Song Club is a curated event with acts who would like to take part applying to be involved. We then select who will be invited to perform each month, however anyone can come along and listen to the excellent array of acts. The last event had a brilliant atmosphere and the club is looking to give a boost to the local music scene.”

February’s featured act will be Hunter and Mcmustard, a unique duo singing a variety of alternative songs from folk to comedy, bluegrass to rockabilly. They reference influences as varied as The Proclaimers and Robert Burns, to Flight of the Conchords and Billy Connolly’s the Humble Bums. John Mcmustard is also the ‘Colonel’ frontman of genre hopping festival-favourite band Colonel Mustard and The Dijon 5.

Hunter and Mcmustard’s appearance at Stirling Song Club will be a taster of what fans can look forward to when they bring their full live show to The Tolbooth on April 1.

Singers interested in joining the Club should contact Stirling Song Club’s Facebook page for further information: www.facebook.com/groups/stirlingsongclub/

The next Stirling Song Club takes place this Sunday, February 26 at 3pm in King Cons, King Street, Stirling.
