New faces at rotary
Rotary in Callander was delighted to welcome two new members, when Anne Gordon and Jim Chesham joined the club.
Club members meanwhile have been busy in the community.
Monthly bingo sessions, supported by Stirling Council’s ‘let’s Get Together ’initiative, have been taking place, with the next session on Thursday March 9 at 2pm in Callander Kirk Hall.
The club has also been collecting used spectacles to be refurbished for use in Ghana, Kenya and other Third World countries.
Club spokesperson Jen Shearer said: “Rotarian Heather Swaine, working in conjunction with local ophthalmologist Andrew Baird, is leading this project. A collection box for used spectacles, placed in Callander Library, is having to be emptied frequently, as the community has been responding generously.
“All donations are welcome – but no spectacle cases please.”
The club has also been fundraising for a mobile defibrillator for use by the police in Callander.
On Easter Sunday (April 9) the Rotarians hold their annual Easter Bottle Stall and Bric-a-brac Sale in Ancaster Square, where the Easter Bunny and Easter Chicken are expected.
And on May 13 there will be another Coffee, Lunch and Crafts Event in Callander Kirk Hall.
“A similar event, held at Christmas time, raised £1000 for charity,” said Jen, “with all profits going to the club’s charity fund, to support local causes.
“Rotary in Callander has also reacted quickly in response to the tragic aftermath of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria by sending a funding contribution for the relief effort, via the Disasters Emergency Committee, which will attract matched funding from the UK government.”
