SNP runner-up proud of local campaign

-

While disappointed to lose the seat, the SNP candidate Ahsan Khan wished new councillor Robin Kleinman well.

The runner-up, who is the husband of Stirling MSP and former councillor Evelyn Tweed, said: “Sadly, it wasn’t to be for us today in the by-election that no-one wanted, caused by the untimely death of our friend Councillor Graham Houston.

“He really was a giant of local government, and so leaves massive shoes to fill. I am sure Robin Kleinman appreciates that and I wish him good luck. And commiserations to the other candidates. Despite our political differences I enjoyed meeting them all.

“Thank you also to everyone who voted for me, and to all in the SNP family who worked so hard.

“I know it is disappointing that we didn’t do it, but we can be proud of the campaign we fought, highlighting some very important local issues, and always making the case for Scottish independence. I am having a wee break now before getting on with the housework neglected for the last six weeks! And I can’t wait for our next campaign.”

Labour’s David Wilson was third with 600 votes, Dick Moerman of the Scottish Liberal Democrats with 399, followed by Clare Andrews of the Greens with 389, and Nickie Willis (Scottish Family Party: Pro-family, Pro-marriage, Pro-life) with 50 votes.

While Labour came third in the byelection, it was seen as having been a positive campaign for the party.

Their candidate David Wilson said: “I would particularly to thank the 600 voters who gave Stirling Labour their first preference vote which saw the Labour vote share increase 1.6 per cent on last year.

“This has seen us progress in the ward from fourth place and a Labour gain to a strong third place this time round which bodes well for the future.

“I would also like to thank my fellow candidates and everyone involved in the election process and give my congratulations to Councillor Kleinman.”
