Concerns over ditched signs

-

Discarded road signs are spoiling communities across Stirling says the area’s Green councillor.

Bridge of Allan and Dunblane ward councillor Alasdair Tollemache says his ward and other council areas are“blighted”by the signs - many of which belong to Stirling Council or are utility works signage.

At a recent special council meeting, Councillor Tollemache asked what the council was doing to “set an example of keeping our council area safe and clean from litter”.

Environment, public transport and net zero convener Councillor Jen Preston (Labour) said:“temporary road signs should be removed on completion on all road works, and is a requirement of the New Roads and Streetworks Act which governs the undertaking of roadworks.

“If signs have been discarded or missed, officers within our Roads Service will report these to the relevant contractor or utility provider to arrange collection of their equipment.

“If Councillor Tollemache can share the locations of any signs that have been discarded, the Roads Service will take action to have these removed.”

However, Councillor Tollemache said:“if I shared those locations it would take me a couple of weeks to walk round these sites.

“There are council road signs that have not been taken in since the jobs have been done. There’s one location which I did report a long time ago and the sign is still there. Please can we find a way of being proactive about this and not reactive because, when we are trying to keep our places clean and tidy for people, to trip over our road signs is not great.”

Councillor Preston said she was happy to discuss the issue further with him.
