Busy rotary is collecting old glasses
Callander Rotarians have been busy in recent weeks, working on a number of initiatives.
The local heat of the national Rotary Primary School Quiz saw a strong entry.
Senior Vice-president of Rotary in Callander, Jen Shearer, said:“it was a pleasure to have all the primary schools in our local group attending, and the competition was fierce. Worthy winners were Doune Primary School, who go forward to the regional finals, with our best wishes for further success.”
As part of a Uk-wide Rotary initiative, the Rotarians have also been collecting used spectacles, which will be checked, graded and sent to African countries for refurbishment and re-use.
“Thanks to the amazing response from the communities in Callander and surrounding villages, and also to the Stirling Reuse Hub, we were delighted to send off 600 pairs of spectacles as our contribution to this worthwhile project,”said Jen. She added:“congratulations to Rotarian Heather Swaine, who masterminded our efforts.”
Most recently, on Easter Sunday, the Rotarians were busy in Ancaster Square, running a bottle stall, bric-a-brac and Easter egg lucky dip - with the Easter Chicken in attendance.
Jen said:“the weather was kind to us, as were our many customers - local residents and visiting tourists
– with the result that we raised almost £700. This sum, added to the proceeds from our club’s other recent fundraising activities, will help us to achieve our goal of providing at least one (and hopefully two) mobile defibrillator(s) for use in Callander police cars. We are most grateful to all who have contributed to this excellent result.”
The next date in the club’s diary is its Spring Coffee, Crafts and Lunch Event, to be held in Callander Kirk Hall on Saturday May 13, with home baking, refreshments, some entertainment by local musicians and a range of interesting craft stalls.
