Author’s creativity was sparked while working at city centre record shop

A Tullibody man, who now has eight self-published books under his belt, first started writing during work lunch breaks at a Stirling record shop.

Don Green, who writes under the pseudonym of Don Galloway, first jotted down ideas while a shop assistant at Europa Music between the late 1990s and early 2000s.

It was there that his first three scifi books in the Time-ryder series emerged.

Don, who also does the artwork for his book covers, said: “I had been working on the Time-ryder Universe for a considerable time before eventually publishing.

“Most of the groundwork of the first three books came while I worked in Europa Music, and scribbling on my lunch hour, but I became dismayed and abandoned my efforts after one too many knockbacks from publishing companies.

“Several years later after the death of my mum Sadie in 2012, one of my old Europa Music colleagues asked about my writing, and I slowly took it up again, this time with my sights set on publishing it myself, publishing the first one - ‘Timeryder: Powerstone Book One’ – a year later.”

Dad-of-four Don (50), who attended Abercomby Primary School and Lornshill Academy, has now been self-published for ten years via Lulu.com based in California.

He currently works in Morrisons Supermarket in Alloa and during evenings spends time Djing, singing and holding Karaoke nights in local clubs and pubs, which he has done for more than 30 years.

Don, who lives with partner Liz, added: “My passion for writing came as an avid science fiction lover.

“I realised that your imagination is your only limit.

“Why limit yourself and write with someone else’s characters when there’s an entire universe you can create.

“I didn’t want to fall into the same tropes as generalised sci-fi and be clichéd.

“I try to give it a real feel, and be more emotion and character driven, but to make it humorous and fun to read as well as being educational in part.

“My goal is to try and get a novel out every six months, with a view to publishing over 40 novels.

“It feels great to see your results on the finished page, and a copy of your own book on the shelf with the satisfied feeling of saying – I did that.”

Don’s latest book ‘The Lady and the Housekeeper’, his eighth, is a departure from science fiction and is set during WW2. He will return to Time-ryder with his next novel entitled ‘Sisterhood of the Veil’.
