Pensioner Ann shuts shop for the last time

-

SHE’S spent her entire life behind a shop counter but this plucky pensioner has finally decided to retire.

Ann Sheldon has dedicated her life to retail but the 72-year-old is now calling it a day.

She initially started working at the Broomfield Post Office, in Reddish, as a shop assistant back in 1958.

But later followed in her grandmother’s footsteps and opened her own shop – a tobacconist and later a hardware and pet shop – with her husband Frank Derek in the early 1970s.

The grandmother-offour eventually returned to work part-time in the post office in 1995 and has been working there ever since.

She said: “I was raised behind a shop counter at my grandmother’s corner shop and I didn’t want to do anything else.

“I always said I’d know when the time was right for me to retire and it’s that time now.

“It will be a big change but my bones aren’t as good as they used to be. I’m going to miss it. I love meeting people and seeing different things.”

Postmistress Sandip Dhillon, who took over the post office in October, paid tribute to Anne.

She said: “She’s been here longer than any of us and she will be missed by all. She is always full of energy and young for her age but she’s decided to give it up.

“Ann showed us the ropes when we took over and really took us all under her wing.

“We’ll miss her company the most but also her delicious cakes.”
