Fun in the sunshine at park re-opening

-

RESIDENTS were out in force enjoying the sunshine at the grand re-opening of Windlehurst Park.

The event was held to celebration the installation of new play equipment, which was completed exactly 12 months after the original equipment was removed.

Last year the Express reported on how the council had removed play equipment from 16 parks across the borough, because they did not comply with health and safety legislation.

Windlehurst was one of the five parks with no budget to replace the equipment, and the friends group was formed in response to the issue.

Following pressure from the group, the council committed £280,000 to be split between the parks, which funded the new equipment at Windlehurst.

Chairman Jamie Beecham said: “The council funded the work and we organised for it to be carried out – we had to push the council but we got there in the end.”

He said there was a big turnout to the reopening event, which was advertised on social media.

“It was officially opened by the minister at Windlehurst Methodist Church, and he did a blessing,” he said.

“He is also hoping to hold some events in the park during the summer, such as outdoor services.

“We had all sorts of activities – it was a really good day.”
