Traffic action group meeting
OVER 100 people were at the first meeting of a group formed to address concerns about the traffic on Windlehurst Road.
Windlehurst Traffic Concern is made up of a group of residents who live either on or near the road, which is about a mile-and-a-half long and runs between Marple and the A6 at High Lane.
It was founded by Matt Grant after he sent a letter outlining his concerns to his neighbours, and found that many of them felt the same way.
The meeting took place at Windlehurst Methodist Church, and was attended by around 110 people, plus outgoing MP Sir Andrew Stunell, Ukip election candidate Darran Palmer, the headteacher at Windlehurst School and a representative from the group ‘Protect High Peak’.
Concerns were raised about the 30mph speed limit on the road being routinely broken, with many people reporting cars travelling at over 50mph on a daily basis.
Residents are also worried that the extension to the A555 will bring more traffic, especially heavy goods vehicles, onto the road, and that cuts have reduced the capacity of the police to take enforcement action.
Matt said: “There was an anger that concerns had been raised time and time again on an individual basis, and we have been met with indifference by our local politicians.”
The group also undertook a number of actions, including forming a steering committee, agreeing to seek affiliation with national groups, making provisional plans for a website and agreeing the provisional name for the group – Windlehurst Area Living Streets.
The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 6, at Windlehurst Methodist Church at 7.30pm.
