Kick-boxer’s knockout performance floors the rest at tournament

-

A TEENAGE kick-boxer dealt a knock-out blow to the opposition when he competed in an international tournament.

Nathaniel Whiles, 18, from Offerton, took part in the Irish Open, in Dublin, where he took joint first position for team GB.

The Irish capital has proved a happy hunting ground for the young martial artist as he claimed four medals – including two golds – there in the World Championships last year.

This year he had to settle for a share of the spoils with German competitor Marvin Dibke.

Nathaniel is also helping the next generation of kick boxing superstars as he is a coach for both martial arts and gymnastics.

Mum Lorraine said: “He is so dedicated to sport that he is a shining example to others, kids love him and their parents speak highly of him.

“I can’t believe they are talking about my son, we are very proud of him.”

Nathaniel is given a helping hand with the cost of competing for team GB by the David Hopkins Foundation.

The organisation helps reach the top of your sport involves a lot of commitment and comes with a huge price tag.

“Without the support from the David Hopkins Foundation Nathaniel might not have been able to take his place at the championships and he would not have stood a chance of getting on the podium.”

Mandy Waller, from the foundation, said: “Nathaniel has achieved deserved recognition on a world stage and we couldn’t be more pleased that we played a small part in helping him achieve what he has worked so hard for.

“While Nathaniel’s story is high profile the foundation is also about supporting grass roots activity as well and encouraging people into sport.”

The foundation, run by Life Leisure, offers grants up to £500 for individuals and £1,000 for clubs, anyone interested can visit www.lifeleisure.net/ enterprise/charity.
