Giller is Harriers star turn at finals

- ATHLETICS PETER POWELL

SPORT city, Manchester saw the annual hosting of the UK Sports hall athletics finals with individuals from Stockport playing their part.

Star of the show was local Harrier Catherine Giller who came away with a silver medal for her efforts in the under 15s 4 x 2 lap relay.

She also produced a fourth place finish in the two-lap sprint just out of medal contention but is sure to thrive throughout the summer in the track and field programmes in Stockport Harriers’ quest to gain promotion to a higher division in the youth development league.

In the boys’ section at the same event, Emilio Ramierez recorded a creditable 14th position in the shot put (8.91m) and also helped Greater Manchester county out in the under 13s sprint relay event

Life certainly began at forty as it was noted that the first ten Stockport Harriers to finish in the Virgin London marathon were all of this age or older and were headed in by Rick Lloyd in 2:37:58.

Martin Townley kept under the 100 mark in his age category to finish in 99th (2:45:13) whilst club mate Paul Johnston stopped the clock in 2:46:01 to record a useful 105th age placing.

In the ladies event, first home for Stockport was Cheryl Rock (3:27:48) and followed in by Amanda Trivett (3:37:58) whilst first over 60 from the local club was credited to Helen Todd in 4:08:54 recording 35th in her age category which now gives her the added pleasure of the Harriers’ club record in this age category.

The road racing fraternity will be making steps and testing the hills at the Annual Buxworth fivemile event promoted by Goyt Valley striders with a 7.30pm start tomorrow evening from the Navigation pub.

This coming Sunday the first Cheshire league summer meeting takes place at Richmond Street playing fields, Ashton– under-Lyne, with all ages catered for in both track and field disciplines.
