Laura’s reward for long service

- SQUASH SHELDAN KEAY

INTERNATIONAL squash player Laura Mylotte has received a President’s Award for her outstanding achievement and contribution to squash after reaching 90 caps for her country.

Mylotte, who lives in Heaton Moor, has represented the Irish national team for nearly 20 years, competing in all six World Team Championships during that time.

The 39-year-old has helped contribute to the team’s most successful era in Irish Women’s squash history, and she is grateful for the recognition.

“I am delighted to receive this honour and have always been very proud to represent my country, although it’s hard to believe that I’ve reached 90 caps,” she said.

“Thanks to my talented and committed fellow team members we have all enjoyed success on the international stage doing what we are passionate about.

“We are about to head off to the Europeans in Denmark, so I will be adding to my caps tally!”

Mylotte has also spent the past 10 years working as Marketing and Communications Manager at Life Leisure in Stockport, and she is glad to be an ambassador for both the company and her sport.

“I love having a job which I enjoy in the sports industry,” she said.

“It gives me the opportunity to share the benefits of sport and promote a healthy lifestyle to as many people as I can.”

Mylotte has been a keen squash player for most of her life, following in her mother’s footsteps and receiving her first international cap at the age of 12 as a junior.

She was ranked as high as 42nd in the world at one point, and has won several trophies during her career, including the ladies title for the past four years.

She recently won her 4th British Over-35 National championship title too, becoming the first person to ever win four British Masters titles in a row.

Since her debut for Ireland in 1994, she has competed many times at the annual European Team Championships, winning silver twice, bronze twice and finishing in the top four positions for the last eight years.

She received her award from Ed Dunne O’Brien, president of Irish Squash.
