AHISTORIC Stockport cinema could re-open as early as this autumn.

The Savoy in Heaton Moor has been closed since November while a buyer was found.

But now a family-run cinema business is hoping to give the venue a new lease of life and work has begun.

The Mundins have already successfully renovated two similar cinemas – The Ritz in Belper, Derbyshire, and The Regal in Melton Mowbray.

Amanda Mundin has been in charge of The Ritz for the past eight years while her son Jacob and his wife Bryony operate The Regal.

Her other son Louis and his fiance Sophie Smith will be taking the reins at The Savoy.

Amanda’s husband Tony said: “We are very much looking forward to bringing the Savoy back to its former glory.

“Cinema plays

an important part in many communities and we feel The Savoy will be no exception.

“We are very excited and hope to be able to offer a fantastic local amenity, with something for everyone, every day of the week.

“We want to bring vibrancy to that part of town and create a buzz that will be felt all around the Heatons.”

A new website - savoycinemaheaton.com – is now live and the family say the renovation could be complete later this year.

A statement on the website said: “We want to do to The Savoy what we have done to the Ritz and Regal. We see real potential for an independent, luxury cinema with a varied programme, comfortable seating, sofas and a bar, catering for the whole community.”

They say the first phase of the development will see a single screen reopen using two-thirds of the current auditorium.

There will be a selection of 125 standard seats, luxury Pullman chairs and even sofas for couples, each with their own table for drinks and snacks.

The latest digital projection and satellite equipment will also be installed to beam in live events straight to the big screen.

The foyer will also be remodelled to offer comfortable seating and a cafe bar.

The family plan to screen two films every evening with family matinees at weekends and during the school holidays.

There will also be a classic film once a month and a specially selected ‘Silver Screen’ showing during the day once a week.
