Coffey polls almost half Stockport vote

-

IT was a case of ‘no surprises’ in Stockport as veteran Labour MP Ann Coffey won the seat for the sixth consecutive General Election.

Ms Coffey has been the town’s MP since defeating Tory Tony Favell in 1992 and voters saw no reason to change tack this time around, returning their longserving parliamentarian once again.

It was a resounding expression of faith in the MP, who polled more votes in this election (19,771) than she did five years ago.

Responding to her victory, Mrs Coffey said: “It’s a great honour and privilege to be reelected as Member of Parliament for Stockport and I will continue to represent their interests of my constituents as best I can in Parliament.

“I’m very pleased with the result, my team put in a good Labour effort, they have worked very hard, not just during the election campaign but over the last five years and I think electorate give us credit for that.

“I think as part of a team you have to have local councillors who work hard on behalf of the community and the community knows that we are not just interested in them at election time, but respond to their issues all year around.”

Tory Daniel Hamilton polled 9,710, the Lib Dems’ Daniel Hawthorne secured 3,034, Gary Lawson of the Green Party received 1,753 votes, John Pearson of Left Unity polled 175 and Steven Woolfe for UKIP secured 5,206.
