Beer festival raises cash for Nepal earthquake victims

-

AN annual beer festival in aid of a scout group helped people a little further from home.

The 1st Heaton Moor Scouts, based on St Paul’s Road, has played host to The Heatons Beer Festival for the past four years.

But this year punters were asked to bring along donations to help the victims of the recent earthquake in Nepal.

Organisers were blown away by residents’ generosity and managed to collect a van load of goods including a number of tents, sleeping bags and countless amounts of food such as rice and pasta.

Organiser Kay Ruby, who owns neighbouring Kro on Heaton Moor Road, said: “We can’t believe how many tents we got.

“Everyone has been so supportive and we ended up with a van full off stuff.

“The Kathmandu Restaurant in Didsbury was already doing a collection but I don’t think they expected us to show up with as much as we did.

“We didn’t expect a response such as this and it was just so lovely to see everyone pull out the stops.”

The annual event raises in the region of £3,000 each year for the scouts.

The weekend-long event saw 45 ales and 30 ciders on offer.

Kay added: “Over the weekend we had a couple of thousand people through the doors.

“The weather was shocking but we still had people come as they know we always put the effort in and have a good spread.

“At Kro we do lots of festivals up and down the country but this is our local one and it’s great to support the scouts and the great work they do.”
