Danny’s enjoying recruitmen­t drive

STOCKPORT Golf Club assistant profession­al Danny Wardrop is delighted with the response of junior golfers to the new initiative the club are promoting to develop and encourage youngsters to get into golf.

Danny, a former England Boys player, Tour profession­al and Manchester Alliance Order of Merit champion is enjoying working with Stockport head pro Gary Norcott in the first year of his PGA course.

He has set up junior boot camps and weekly junior group lessons throughout the summer and one of the highlights will be a Family Open Day on July 12.

Danny said: “I have run the boot camps during school holiday breaks and we have junior group lessons every Saturday from 1.30pm to 2.30pm which are open to everybody subject to availabili­ty.

“The Family Open Day is from 12 noon to 4pm with a wide range of activities for juniors and adults including free lessons and advice, golf competitio­ns, a Tri Golf experience, a golf simulator plus BBQ and refreshmen­ts.

A singles Stableford for Stockport’s men was won by Martin Massey with 35 points, one more than Mike Kenyon, Neil McQueen. Ian Johnson and Stuart Roberts.

A midweek Stableford for Marple’s men was won by Mellor FC soccer ‘legend’ Craig Frisby after a cpo on 39 points with Mike Field, two more than Dillon McPhee.

The Hulse Trophy at Marple was won by J Bawden and G Adams on 68.5 from J Taylor and T Christie 70.

A qualifying Stableford for Marple’s ladies had Glenda Conway in the driving seat with a great haul of 41 points, six more than Sue Smeaton and Louise Hodkinson.

Cheadle’s men played for the Charity Cup and in a tight finish seven players were locked on 35 points.

Getting the nod was Barry Borgen from Alistair Culpan, Bill Venables, Mark Gregory, Don Milligan, Reg Skinner and Martin Lloyd.

Hazel Grove’s men played for the Ian Ainsworth Trophy and Rob Cain won a cpo on 68 from John McClellan, John Brazier and Eric Slater.

Grove’s ladies were also in trophy action with YouHee Kelleher first past the post with 39 points, three more than Elaine Beswick.

Reddish Vale’s men were in action in two competitio­ns and in a Wednesday Stableford the divisions were won by Craig Hill with 37 points, Michael Thompson 38 and Graham Taylor 37.

In the Monthly medal at Vale John Schofield topped division one with 68, two less than Liam Houghton and the other divisions were led in by Lee Addison after a cpo on 69 with Anthony Foster and Michael Oates and Jamie Oldham 72.

The preliminar­y round of the MDLGA Bell Cup has been completed and it is now down to the last 64 teams from an original entry of over 80 clubs.

The local derby at Disley saw the home team prevail 5-2 against Reddish Vale to book a tie against Stand in round one.

Also going through were Hazel Grove by 5-2 at Bury and Bramhall by the same score at Wilpshire.

Through with byes were Marple who host Knutsford, Bramall Park at home to Withington, Heaton Moor away at Styal, Houldswort­h at home to Leyland, Stockport hosting Saddlewort­h and Mellor and Townscliff­e at Astbury.

Shrigley Hall have a great series of Open competitio­ns during the summer months beginning with a Seniors Pairs on June 4 and a Team of Four Open on June 24.

The penultimat­e Manchester Alliance fixture of the winter season had glorious weather and an excellent Mackenzie course at Hazel Grove as a full field played for the Leo Feeney Trophy.

Swinton Park profession­al Dave Smith and exCaptain Jimmy O’Reilly were fired up by the sun and posted a superb 45 points to claim the Leo Feeney Trophy for the first time in their club’s history.

But pressing them all the way were Bramall Park assistant pro Liam Burgess, defying a niggling back injury, and club partner Sam Everton with 44 points.

Burgess also posted the top individual score of 40 points (gross 67).

Taking third place after a cpo on 44 points were Gatley’s Tom Bolton and Gordon Scott from Davenport’s Graham Cox and Adam Wolstenhol­me.

Completing the prize list were Alan Crompton and John Egan (Haigh Hall) with 43 points.

Mellor and Townscliff­e duo Chris Lee and Tony Woodford made the short trip from their club to cruise to victory in the am am section with 42 points seeing them clear of Keith Ashton (Horwich) and Vincent Doyle (Leigh) 41 and Ellesmere’s Neil Anderson and Barry Choaplo 40.
